2017 Sehome Mariners Preview

Coach: Kevin Beason, 1st season with Sehome (0-0)

Home Field: Civic Stadium

Last Season: 0-10 (0-7 NWC)

Key Losses: WR/S Marcus Montag; RB/OLB Anton Arena; QB Nic Roger; OL/DL Arman Yaralian; TE Sean Graham; WR/DB Jack Carbee.

Top Returnees: QB/P Michael Mindnich; OL/DL Brady Norvell; WR/DB Ben Dauber; OL/DL Bryce Andrews.

  1. Michael Mindnich – Quarterback/Punter

“The Headband” is back at it again. He has great athleticism, and he can make all of the throws. Only a junior, he could have a great year.

2. Brady Norvell – Right Tackle/Nose Tackle

He has a good mentality for the line, and should be the Mariners’ anchor on both sides of the ball.

3. Ben Dauber – Wide Receiver/Safety

He’ll be the main threat in the passing game, and he could “lay the lumber” from his safety position. Expect to hear his name called a lot at Civic Stadium on Friday nights.

4. Bryce Andrews – Left Tackle/Defensive End

Great size (6-4 240) for a high school offensive tackle/defensive end. Only a junior, he could show some abilities that will allow him to play at the collegiate level.

Fastest Players: Melloy Nelson, Jay Travier, Dylan Roberts and Austin Roberts.

Strongest Players: Brady Norvell, Bryce Andrews and Dawson Burrows.

Smartest Players: Logan Henry and Brett Meggysey.

Who will be Sehome’s breakout player?

Dylan Roberts – Running Back/Outside Linebacker

Roberts is going to be the featured back, and in a new offense he should flourish. It also helps to run behind a line that averages almost 250 pounds per player.

Sehome is boasting a new schedule, a new outlook, and a new coach for a new season. After going winless in 2016, the Mariners will look to turn the page this season and get back to their winning ways. Former Sehome standout Kevin Beason is the new head coach and he’s excited to be back.
“We’re about doing things the right way. The Mariner way,” said Beason. “The choices that we make, in terms of our commitment, our attitude and our discipline, those are all shaped by our core covenants.”
Junior Michael Mindnich got valuable playing time last year, completing 36 passes for 500 yards and three touchdowns. However, it’s a new offense this year, and he will be working out of the pistol. “Michael can make all the throws,” Beason said. He’ll be backed up by 6-foot-1 180-pound freshman, Jacob Kaepernick.
Junior Dylan Roberts will take over as the running back ,and even though he only had 20 carries last season, he has Coach Beason excited. “Dylan can do some great things on the field,” he said. “He’s just an exciting kid to watch play football.” Fellow junior Lucas DeLisle should also get some carries. Senior Ryan McDonnell and sophomore Dawson Smith will share time at “H-Back”.
6-foot-3 senior Ben Dauber returns at wide receiver and should be the main threat in the passing game. Also split out wide will be juniors Jay Travier and Austin Fletcher, along with sophomore Melloy Nelson, who Coach Beason says, “Melloy makes fast kids look not very fast.”
The offensive line should be a pretty good unit, and leading the way will be senior right tackle, Brady Norvell. Protecting the blind side at left tackle will be 6-foot-4 240-pound junior, Bryce Andrews. Junior Logan Henry will be the biggest center in the county (6-5 245), and he will be surrounded by guards Koa Ostos and Dawson Burrows.
In Beason’s 3-4 defense Norvell will line up at nose tackle, and the defensive ends will be Andrews and senior Kosmx Rankin. The inside linebackers will be McDonnell and Smith, with Roberts and DeLisle playing outside linebacker. DeLisle intercepted a pass last season against Cedarcrest.
The junior combination of Fletcher and Austin Roberts will play cornerback, with junior Brett Meggysey at safety along with Dauber. Nelson will be the kicker for the Mariners, and Mindnich will return as the punter after averaging over 30 yards per punt last season. Nelson and Travier will start the season as the kick returners.
It’s tough to say what this season holds for Sehome, but I think it will be positive. Strong senior leadership will help, and a loaded junior class will carry the Mariners into the future.
