The 1979 Lions were loaded, and went through the league unblemished. A tough loss to Sultan in the opening round ended the season, but it still was a great season.

Junior lefty Vince Blauser won the quarterback job, and didn’t disappoint. He completed 19 passes for 231 yards, three touchdowns, and he ran for two more scores. Senior Benji Lange also showed off his strong arm, completing seven passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Craig Seutz was the workhorse for the Lions, rushing for 647 yards (4.7 average) and three touchdowns, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Fellow junior Leif Erickson was a load to bring down. At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds he rambled for 369 yards (4.7) and five touchdowns on his was to being named All-League 1st Team. Senior Bart Amsler ran for 327 yards (4.5) and one touchdown while junior Rick Holt chipped in with 249 yards (3.0) and three scores.

When Lynden went to the air, they usually went to one guy. 6-foot-3 senior receiver Kurt Langstraat had a great year, catching 13 passes for 286 yards (22.0) and three touchdowns on his way to being named All-League 1st Team. Senior Fred Silva, junior Greg Stoffer and Holt each caught a touchdown pass.

The offensive line was the biggest strength for the ’79 team. It was loaded with talent, and seniors Mark Morgan and Keith Louws led the way. Although on the smaller side (5’9″ 170), Morgan was named All-League 1st Team for the second year in a row. Louws (6’3″ 190) had a tremendous year, and was also named All-League 1st Team, and he was also named All-State 1st Team. Senior Gary Allen was an All-League 2nd Team selection, as was junior center Mark Maberry. The Lions ran for 1675 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Much of the same players that dominated on the offensive line did the same on the defensive line. Allen was not only an All-League 1st team pick, but he also landed on the All-State 1st Team. Louws joined Allen on the All-League 1st Team. Morgan was also very good on the d-line, and was named All-League 2nd Team. Holt and Erickson teamed up to form one of the best junior linebacking duos in school history. While Erickson was picking up All-League 2nd Team honors, Holt’s amazing play landed him on the All-League 1st Team, and he was chosen as the League’s Defensive Player of the Year. The secondary was led by 5’9″ 170-pound senior Rich Anker, who was named All-League 2nd Team.

Lange did it all on special teams, and has the awards to prove it. He kicked 15 extra points and three field goals, and was named All-League 2nd Team as a kicker. He also showed off his powerful leg while punting the ball, and was named All-League 1st Team as a punter.

The 1979 Borderites entered the season full of confidence. They had just come off of Whatcom County’s first football state championship season, and while they lost a lot of key players from the team due to graduation, they were returning their leading rusher, and another Kramme was taking over the reigns of the offense.

Senior Bert Kramme stepped right in at quarterback where his brother Curt left off. He completed 18 passes for 405 yards and five touchdowns. Despite having a great throwing arm, the Borderites still elected to pound the ball with the running game. The majority of those handoffs were to senior fullback, Tony Bladies. He ran for 823 yards (4.5 average) and 16 touchdowns. He was named All-League 1st Team, and was also the League’s Offensive Player of the Year. Senior Russ Moquin ran for 275 yards (4.4) and two touchdowns while being named All-League 2nd Team. Junior Jeff Peltier added 264 yards on the ground while senior Iain Wingard chipped in with 179 yards. Each player ran for a touchdown as well.

Senior Mike Butler was Blaine’s deep receiving threat. He caught six passes for 215 yards (35.8) and two touchdowns. Bladies caught four passes and Moquin hauled in three.

The offensive line was a big asset for the Borderites. Returning at center was junior Rob McAllister. He joined with another big junior (6-4 200) David Wiederspohn to solidify the line. Both players were named All-League 1st Team. Junior Gregg Waters also played well, and was named All-League 2nd Team. The Borderites ran the ball on 86% of their plays, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and 21 touchdowns.

The defensive line was stout, and it was led by Bladies and Wiederspohn. Bladies was named All-League 1st Team on the defensive line for an amazing third season in a row. Wiederspohn was also named All-League 1st Team. McAllister led the linebacking corps, and was picked All-League 1st Team. The secondary was headed up by Wingard and Moquin, both of whom were All-League 1st Team performers.

After kicking two long field goals in the Kingdome in last year’s state championship, Kramme kept his momentum going with the toe. He was named All-League 1st Team, booting 16 extra points and one field goal. Moquin handled the punting and was an All-League 2nd Team selection.

The 1979 Mariners featured a well-balanced offense and a bruising defense. It also featured a new coach, and after losing their first two games, they finished winning six of their last seven games.

Junior quarterback Scott Swedberg led the team, completing 39-of-85 passes for 538 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 80 yards and a score. Senior running back Ladin Langeman came off a huge season where he ran for over 1100 yards to gain 496 yards and eight touchdowns, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Senior Pete Dawson carried the ball 52 times for 431 yards (an unbelievable 8.3 average) and two touchdowns. Senior Curt O’Connor ran for 128 yards and two scores.

Senior wide receiver Sean Riley had a great year with 14 catches for 274 yards (19.6) and a touchdown, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior tight end Gary Davis was also a reliable target with a team-high 16 receptions for 149 yards (9.3) and a score. Senior Mitch Evich also caught a touchdown pass.

Senior Scott Sandal led the offensive line’s surge from his center position, and was named All-League 1st Team. The Mariners ran for 1463 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season.

Defense was a huge factor for Sehome’s success in 1979, and it had many standouts. Senior Rob George dominated the line of scrimmage, and was named All-League 1st Team on the defensive line. He was joined on the line by O’Connor who was named All-League 2nd Team. Dawson and Davis led the linebacking corps, Dawson was named All-League 1st Team and Davis was a 2nd Team selection. Riley led the back end of the Mariner defense, and he was named All-League 1st Team, while Evich also played well in the secondary, and he was named All-League 2nd Team.

Junior Mike Zimmerman handled all of the kicking duties. He was named All-League 1st Team at punter, and he also was selected at kicker on the All-League 2nd Team, kicking 18 extra points and two field goals.
