State Playoffs: 1st Round: Shorewood 7, Ferndale 6

In Vic Randall’s second season as head coach of the Golden Eagles, he turned the program around from a three-win season to a seven-win season. A tough out in the first round of the state playoffs was disappointing, but Ferndale still had a lot to be proud of in 1983.

Sophomore Doug Pederson ousted junior Trevor Monette to be the starting quarterback, and had a relatively strong season. He completed 31 passes for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The future looked bright for the athletic Pederson.

Junior Duff McBride led the Golden Eagles in rushing with 609 yards, and fellow junior Jim Baker had almost identical numbers, rushing for 593 yards (4.4 average) and five touchdowns. Senior Evan Svedin was a big-play threat out of the backfield, rushing for 378 yards (5.9) and a team-high six touchdowns. Svedin also led the team in receiving with 11 catches and 118 yards. Senior Jim Wilkerson hauled in five passes for 68 yards and a score.

Senior Roger Wilkinson was the leader of the offensive line, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Junior Jeff Slaughter was named All-League 2nd Team. The worked with seniors Eric Graves and Eric Hulsman, and junior Mark Westhoff, as together they helped clear the way for the crafty Wing-T offense.

Wilkinson was named All-League 1st Team as a defensive lineman as well, standing out for the second season in a row. Svedin was also named All-League 1st Team as a defensive end. Junior defensive end Mike Haynie also stood out. McBride led the secondary from his safety position, and was named All-League 1st Team. Sophomore Don Finkbonner scored a 30-yard touchdown on a fumble return against Arlington, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. The defense was terrific, shutting out three opponents.

Wilkerson was named All-League 1st Team as a kicker, as he nailed five extra points and three field goals.

The Mountaineers had a few things going for them in 1983. They had a great pair of running backs. They had an outstanding defense. And, they only had to play Meridian once. However, it still wasn’t enough to get into the playoffs.

Tim Knebel
Tim Knebel

The offense was led by junior quarterback, Tim Knebel. It was his first year as the starting quarterback, and he had a great one. He completed 53 passes for 569 yards and nine touchdowns. He also ran for 173 yards, three touchdowns, and was named All-League 2nd Team. He had a pair of halfbacks that put up almost identical numbers. Junior Leroy Harkness ran the ball for 699 yards (5.9 average) and four touchdowns. Senior Brett Engholm rushed for 695 yards (5.7) and six touchdowns. Both players were named All-League 2nd Team. Helping them gain big yards was senior fullback, Stacy Zudell. A converted offensive lineman, the 5-foot-9 215-pounder could really clear a path. He also ran for four touchdowns.

Putting the ball in the air seemed to be no problem for the Mounties, as they had a great pair of tall targets to toss to. Senior Eric Jacoby was the main one, catching 25 passes for 361 yards (14.4) and six touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior Jeff Zollner complimented Jacoby well, hauling in 16 passes for 204 yards (12.8) and three scores. Engholm also caught 10 passes out of the backfield.

Brett Engholm

The offensive line was a good one. They plowed the way for almost 2000 yards rushing, in an era where offensive linemen were not allowed to use their hands in any way. It also started with junior center, Duane Zender. The 190-pounder was an All-League 1st Team pick. As was senior guard Doug Teshera (6-4 195) and senior tackle Mark Silves (also 6-4 195). Baker also got great play up front by the 225-pound senior tackle, Kim Villani, who was named All-League 2nd Team.

The defense shut out four opponents in nine games, and really made life difficult for the opposing offense. Jacoby spearheaded the attack from his defensive end position, and actually brought back two interceptions for touchdowns in the opening game against Lynden, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior Shannon Franks (5-11 185) manned the middle, and was named All-League 1st Team at linebacker. Silves and Zudell used their big bodies to create havoc in the interior line, and were each named All-League 2nd Team, while Knebel led the secondary and was also a pick for the All-League 2nd Team.

Warner Webb

Mount Baker looked to freshman Warner Webb to handle the kicking duties, and he made 11 extra points. Knebel also made an extra point, and kicked a field goal.

The 1983 Lyncs started the season with great expectations, but with one big injury, their season didn’t go exactly as planned. They had a strong senior class, and well-balanced offense.

Jordan Jansen
Jordan Jansen

Senior quarterback Jordan Jansen began the season as the starting quarterback. After two games he was 2-0, passing for 354 yards and three touchdowns. He looked every bit like the All-League 1st Team quarterback that he was as a junior. He suffered an unfortunate injury in the third game of the season, and down went the playoff hopes for LC. Junior receiver Kevin Kaemingk (who caught six passes for 77 yards in game two) took over under center, completing 50-of-104 passes for 683 yards and three scores.

Tim Vander Veen
Tim Vander Veen

Senior running back Tim Vander Veen had an unbelievable season for Lynden Christian. He became the first player in school history to rush for over 1000 yards in a season, with 1097 yards and 13 touchdowns. It would be another 14 years until the Lyncs would have another 1000-yard rusher. He was named All-League 1st Team, and was also named as the League’s Offensive Player of the Year. He also graduated as the school’s all-time leading rusher, until Lance Bosman passed him in 1995.

Senior receiver Tim Zylstra had a tremendous season, catching 33 passes for 506 yards (15.3 average) and two touchdowns. He was named All-League 1st Team and his 33 receptions broke a school record. Fellow seniors Mike Van Weerdhuizen and Bill Dykstra each caught 13 passes. Van Weerdhuizen totaled 293 yards receiving, while Dykstra had 101.

Junior Tim Van Lohuizen anchored the offensive line from his guard position and was named All-League 1st Team. The Lyncs ran for 1375 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.

On defense, senior Glen Matter’s size (6-3 210) and strength allowed him to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines. He was named All-League 1st Team. Vander Veen and Van Lohuizen manned the linebacking positions. Vander Veen was named All-League 1st Team, while Van Lohuizen was All-League 2nd Team. Zylstra was the leader of the secondary and was named All-League 1st Team. Tom Bajema returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown against Lynden.

Jansen started the season as the kicker, connecting on six extra points. Zylstra also hit a pair of PAT’s.
