Coach Dan Kaemingk had an incredibly run with the Lyncs in the 90’s, and he started out the 2000’s with another fantastic team. They were a touchdown away from getting to the Tacoma Dome, and were a very well-rounded team.

Jeremy Huntley

Senior Jeremy Huntley had a knack for throwing an incredibly accurate deep ball, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. He completed 95 passes for 1475 yards and 23 touchdowns, to only six interceptions. He also ran for three touchdowns.

Brent Berendsen

The offensive backfield turned into a three-headed monster with juniors Brent Berendsen and Scott Dirksen, along with senior Mike Ruble. Ruble was named All-League 2nd Team, and the bruising 210-pound fullback plowed his way for 391 yards (5.8 average) and six touchdowns. Berendsen finished with 498 yards (6.1) and four touchdowns, while Dirksen totaled 446 yards (4.1) and five touchdowns. Senior Greg Mouw also contributed with 206 yards (4.0) and three scores.

Rob Ylinen

Rob Ylinen graduated as the school’s all-time leading receiver. The athletic senior finished his final year with 41 catches for 611 yards (14.9) and six touchdowns, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Junior Lincoln Vander Veen caught 29 passes for 528 yards (18.2) and a team-high eight touchdowns, and he went on to be named All-League 1st Team. Juniors Ian Hinton, Clint Bosman and Taylor DeBoer caught three touchdowns apiece.

Daren Heerspink

The offensive line was led by seniors Joe Vanderpol (6-4 195) and J.D. DeVries (6-2 250). Both players were named All-League 1st Team. Senior Lucas Hemnes (6-2 215) was named All-League 2nd Team. Senior Dillon Honcoop (6-2 190) and junior Daren Heerspink (6-5 215) rounded out the rest of the line.

Lincoln Vander Veen

Vanderpol also led the charge from the defensive line, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Heerpsink was also showing what his future was about to be, and was named All-League 2nd Team. Ruble was a three-year starter, and a rock as an inside linebacker, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Vander Veen was in his third year has a varsity defensive back, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Bosman had one of the best legs in school history, nailed 43 extra points, and was named All-League 2nd Team at kicker.

The 2000 Lions were the beginnings of a new wave of Lynden talent. They had a solid senior class, with many talented underclassmen that showed promise for the near future.

Ty Taubenheim
Ty Taubenheim

Senior quarterback Ty Taubenheim, at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, had one of the strongest arms in Whatcom County’s history. In the finale of his junior season he threw for a state-record 514 yards against Squalicum, but the game was lost. In 2000 he completed 87 passes for 1327 yards, eight touchdowns and he was named All-League 2nd Team for the second year in a row. He was joined in the backfield by a pair of underclassmen. Sophomore T.J. Busch had a breakout season, rushing for 817 yards (6.8 average) and seven touchdowns. He had a massive game against Sedro Woolley, rushing for 285 yards, which still stands as the third highest single game total in school history, and he was named All-League Honorable Mention. Junior fullback Jordan Stenersen ran for 296 yards (4.3), was automatic at the goal line with a team-high 10 rushing touchdowns, and he was also named All-League Honorable Mention. Senior B.J. Louws ran for 239 yards while junior Cole Price added 170 yards.

Lynden’s receiver relished at the chance to catch passes from Taubenehim, and they took advantage of many airborne passes. Senior wide receiver Shane Verbrugge was the leading pass catcher with 27 receptions for 491 yards (18.2) and four touchdowns, and he was an All-League 1st Team selection. Junior wide out Kaleb Coleman caught 22 passes for 315 yards (14.3), one touchdown, and was named All-League Honorable Mention. Junior tight end Darrell Visser used his 6-foot-5 frame to haul in 10 passes for 119 yards (11.9), and he was also an All-League Honorable Mention pick.

The offensive line was led by three outstanding seniors. Dan Hagins (6-1 250) was the top lineman, and was named All-League 1st Team. Trevor Holman (6-5 250) was a massive blocker, and was named All-League 2nd Team. Troy Dyer (6-0 240) was another strong one up front, and he was an All-League Honorable Mention pick. A pair of sophomores, Evan Noteboom and Dirk Dahlgren, rounded out the line, and they both got great experience to help them in the next two seasons.

The defense was well-rounded with many players contributing towards its success. The defensive line was led by a pair of juniors. Jeff Roberts was a tall (6-5), athletic defensive end with 39 total tackles, five passes deflected, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Brandon Stauffer broke through the interior of the line to have 50 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Both players were named All-League 2nd Team.

At linebacker the Lions had a good one in senior Ross Dickinson. He was also named All-League 2nd Team, and he finished with 79 total tackles, one tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. He was joined by Louws, and junior Dave Wall. Louws totaled 78 total tackles, two fumble recoveries and one tackle for loss. Wall came off the edge and had 75 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Both players were named All-League Honorable Mention.

The secondary was headed up by senior Tyler Thalman, who was named All-League 2nd Team. He finished with 63 total tackles, six tackles for loss, five interceptions, three pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was joined by senior Josh Klaffke and junior Eric Powell. Klaffke had 39 total tackles, four interceptions (one was returned for a touchdown), three fumble recoveries, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble. Powell had 72 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one interception. Both players were named All-League Honorable Mention. Verbrugge also had a good year on defense, deflecting six passes, blocking two kicks and he returned an interception for a touchdown.

Taubenheim, along with Eli Tadema, split the kicking duties. Taubenehim made 15 extra points and one field goal, and Tadema hit on seven extra points. Taubenheim was also named All-League 1st Team at punter.

The 2000 Mariners were coming off one of their best seasons in school history, and started the season strong with seven straight wins. However, they finished the season with three straight losses, and just missed the 4A State Playoffs.

Junior quarterback James Monrean took over for Paul Nicholes who had graduated. Although Monrean didn’t have the same kind of speed that Nicholes boasted, he had an amazingly strong arm. He completed 41 passes for 511 yards and seven touchdowns. He was joined in the backfield by an amazing pair of senior running backs. Mike McEvoy steamrolled through opposing defenders, as the 6-foot-1 230-pounder ran for 1458 yards (7.2 average) and 13 touchdowns on his way to being named All-League 1st Team. He was joined by the shifty 195-pound halfback, Andrew Holloway, who ran for 716 yards (5.9) and 11 touchdowns. He would be named All-League Honorable Mention.

Throughout the decade of the 90’s, Sehome produced a lot of top-end talent tight ends. It would continue in 2000 with 6-foot-5 235-pound senior, Brad Rhoades. He led the Mariners with 15 catches for 202 yards (13.5) and three touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior receiver Bryan Whitlock caught nine passes for 142 yards (15.8) and a pair of scores. Senior Cory Brock and junior Josh McBride each caught a touchdown pass.

The offensive line was a sight to behold, especially the left side, that featured a pair of three-year starters. Senior left tackle Matt Chalfant (6-6 295) and senior left guard Mike Reed (6-0 265) were each named All-League 1st Team. Senior Andy Tsiorvas (5-11 210) started at right guard, and was named All-League Honorable Mention. The Mariners ran the ball over 400 times, averaging 6.1 yards per rush and 25 touchdowns.

The defensive line was anchored by Reed and Rhoades, who were each named All-League 1st Team. Rhoades intercepted a pass against Mariner, and brought it back 42 yards for a touchdown. Seniors Beau Robey (6-1 295) and Josh Davis (6-1 245) supplied ample size and strength, and were each named All-League Honorable Mention on the D-Line. The linebacking corps was led by one of the best linebackers in Whatcom County history. McEvoy had amazing instincts, size, speed and tackling ability, and he was an obvious choice for All-League 1st Team. He was joined by Holloway (All-League 2nd Team) and Tsiorvas (All-League Honorable Mention). Whitlock headed up the secondary, and was named All-League Honorable Mention.

Senior Andrew Andersen kicked 20 extra points and his five field goals kicked led the entire county.
