Top 100 Players of 2017 – #5 – Mikhail Varetskiy

3 carries – 25 yards – 1 touchdown

Once I become more established, I would love to give out official awards to certain players. Linemen need more recognition, even though they know it’s a thankless job and they have to buy into that mentality, it doesn’t go unrecognized by me. Do you know why Ferndale racked up nearly 5000 yards of offense and 71 offensive touchdowns? Varetskiy is a gigantic reason why, and if I could, I would give him the 2017 “Lineman of the Year” award. Awesome strength from his offensive tackle position, and tremendous speed as a defensive end. Only three players in Ferndale history have been named All-State 1st Team at both offensive line and defensive line in the same season, and Mikhail is one of them. The others are Derek Altona (2005) and Chad Meynders (2001). Varetskiy was also named All-Conference 1st Team at offensive line and defensive line for the second year in a row. It was also pretty sweet to see him run the ball against Marysville-Getchell!
